Hello fellows,
In today's post, I decided to talk about children's personalities and how it impacts their developmental milestones. I was reading an article in the Parent's Canada magazine about the walking milestone. I was nodding while reading the whole article in agreement. We have to understand that every child has a different personality, not even the twins have the same personalities. So just think, if twins (who look so much alike) don't have same personalities, how can 2 children who may not even look anything alike? I am speaking this from on my personal experience and as well as some from what I have learned from Early Chilldhood Education program.
We start getting worried if one child is reaching a milestone and another child (around the same age) is not. Whereas, I really believe that we really should not be. As long as you know that your child is developing at a decent pace, you shouldn't really be concerned if he/she is not walking at 9 months. Before I go ahead into anymore details, I really do want to
mention this that I am in no way a professional in Child Psychology or Pediatric or anything related to that. So If you are concerned about your child's growth/development, please consult your doctor or pediatric. Do not take any advice from me in any professional manner, the purpose of this post is only to entertain and share my own opinions.
Let's go back to the topic: individual personalities every child has. I think that we should really respect our child(ren)'s personalities and not be discouraged, dis-hearted or be concerned about it. Some children will be laid back and some are "on-the-go", as I like to call it. My daughter has a very laid back personality. She will take her time to do everything, which to me it really good. I don't want to rush her into anything, I want her to take her time if she really has to. She started crawling really late and she started walking very late too. There were people who were like why isn't she crawling yet? Why hasn't she started walking? To be honest, at some point I did got concerned and decided to raise the topic on my next doc's visit. I consulted my doctor and she reassured me that she is developing in a decent pace so I really shouldn't worry. After her reassurance I knew Ar was fine and I needn't worry.
I still had people who worried about it (which I appreciated and respected) but I wasn't. I guess the main reason was because I had learned about it in ECE program. Some children will talk sooner than others, some will walk sooner than others, some will read sooner than others, some will be more intellectual than others, and so on. Don't ever push your child to do anything they don't want to because they might still do it, but they won't enjoy doing it and in some cases they may even drift away (this is not the word I am looking for, if you know what I am trying to say, comment below) from you if you keep doing it. Take your example, if you are forced to do something (it could be anything you don't really want to do), you will hate doing it.
The bottom line is that let children be children and let them grow/develop how they want to. Let them do what they want to do and enjoy doing, within your set limits of course. Doing so will strengthen the bond between the child(ren) and the parent which is much needed in these days. Also, I'd rather let my child be slow and excel in what he/she does; than rush them into doing something and not be as much successful (if that makes sense, but you got my point 😉).
LIVE AND LET LIVE.

LIVE AND LET LIVE.
I learned first hand how different kids were.
ReplyDeleteI posted a short while ago , About Bobby and his cousins (3 Bobby, 2 Mike and Leah 1)
They were raised like brothers and sister. I had them most of the time for years.
Bobby was always the first do do things. I never had to potty train him. He just decided one day he wasn't wearing diapers any more. He always had cloth diapers and rubber pants unless we were gone for the day or a good part of it. He didn't like to be wet.
He was 9 months here. EARLY. I wasn't prepared for it. We also didn't live anywhere close to TOWN where I could get Big Boy underwear. He had some MISHAPS but not very many.
It took longer at night but not a lot.
The first few days, I had a friend give me some of her son's old undies. Bobby loved them.
We went shopping as soon as we could.
He wanted underwear like his grandpa had. (My dad). He wore white underwear.
They didn't have any.
Then he saw GI JOE ones and thought that would be OK until he could get REAL ones.
He finally picked out different characters and liked them.
But you should have heard him when he first saw REAL UNDERWEAR in his size.
White....Just like his grandpa.
We had to call Grandpa up and tell him.
Leah was not hard to train. She was potty train around 1 and a half. Nights by 2.
Then there was MIKE.
Mike never minded wet diapers. Or POOPY ones.
He did like "Compliments and being told GOOD JOB etc. So he started because he needed the encouragement.
Night time was another story. Michael slept through everything.
I had visions of him starting school not being completely potty train.
Tyler came along years later. He was late doing everything. Why? Because he had a sister and a brother and most of all a cousin who did everything for him.
I didn't think he would ever walk.
We were at a soccer game.Bobby, Mike and Leah were all on different teams and playing around the same time.
My parents, Donna and Van, (Their mom and dad) and my grandparents. All 3 groups took one kid leaving me to go back and forth.
I had to watch all 3 of them.
I had been talking to Donna and watching Mike (I think) when I went to leave. I had 2 others to watch. I went to take off when TYLER Screamed MADLY( He wasn't talking much yet either) I turned around and he was running. Not walking but running as fast as his little legs could carry him.
He Was running to catch up with me. Granted it wasn't very fast and it looked pretty funny....
Up until this time, TYLER had refused to walk anywhere other than a around furniture and table legs.
He never had to. Someone always picked him up.
That day, He didn't want to be left behind without me.
He walked everywhere from then on. He was a year and a half.
Thank you for enabling me to remember moments like this.
Aww, that was so much fun to read. Haha, my daughter is the same, she doesn't care about how wet her diaper is, but I am trying to get her potty trained in these months. :D
