Technology these days

Welcome back,

I hope your day is going fine. I want to talk about technology today and how it is impacting our child(ren).

Warning: this post may take a route to an essay.

Just kidding, I'll try to make it fun for you to enjoy reading. I have seen so many children using gadgets such as iPhones, tablets, etc. which is fine. That's what era they are living in, the technological era. What I have a problem with is the excessive amount of usage. Ar is still very very young and I try to
limit her screen time as much as I can. But sometimes I let her watch her cartoons for the most 30 minutes in one sitting. I really don't want her to get used to the screen time a lot. I know that excessive amount of anything is never good but this really bothers me. I have seen children using their gaming consoles for almost the whole day everyday that bothers me so much. I once posted my Facebook status that I will not allow Ar to own even one gadget before she is in high school, then I added OK at least until middle school. It really is hard to keep our child(ren) away from gadgets because all the see around them is gadgets...everywhere. Mom has them, dad has them, friends have them, everyone everywhere has them. It is OK for them the own a gadget, but it is not OK for them to use it excessively. As my husband says, we will buy Ar everything when she reaches a certain age and she will know what her limits are. I think we are responsible of how much time we allow them to use the gadgets and we are also the role models as well. If they see us watching TV, using computer and chatting on the phone throughout the day, they will get the message that that's what we're supposed to be doing. They will follow us, whatever we do, they will do.

I think the best way to help manage the usage of the gadgets is that we should set a time limit in which they are allowed to play PSP, use computer, or whatever. And if they don't follow the set time limit, set a "punishment". Punishment is a harsh word, but let them know that if they don't follow the guidelines, they will  have to do a chore or their gadgets can be taken away for a day or they won't be getting their pocket money for the week or whatever. That way we are setting a limit for them and they know that if they won't follow what will follow next (if you know what I mean ;)). Also, if we are using our gadgets excessively in front of them, we're setting the wrong example. We should be able to show them that gadgets are not our breathing devices, we can live without them. If you don't know what to do in your spare time with them; take them out, go for a walk, ride a bike together, cook meals together, bake together, there are just so many things we can do with our child(ren) and make them fun but we just have to "think outside the box". Yes, gadgets are necessary in this era, but they should be limited for a certain time, and place. This reminds me the usage of phones while eating together, one word: NO!

PUT THE PHONE DOWN AND ENJOY THE MOMENT! <3
